12 Questions to Ask a Wedding DJ Before You Book

Couples often ask wedding DJs the same three questions:
Are you available? How much do you cost? What’s included?
Those questions matter, but they barely scratch the surface.
After nearly 20 years working weddings, I think some of the best questions are the ones that reveal how a DJ thinks.
Ask how they decide what music to play. You want to understand whether they build the night around you and your guests or simply arrive with a standard wedding playlist.
Ask how they handle requests. There should be a thoughtful answer. Requests can be fantastic clues about what guests want, but not every request belongs at every wedding.
Ask how much they talk on the microphone. Some DJs are energetic emcees. Others are intentionally minimal.
Make sure their style matches your comfort level.
Ask whether they provide ceremony audio and what that includes. If you’re hiring one company for ceremony and reception, understand the microphone setup, music playback and whether they have experience with outdoor
ceremonies.
Ask what happens if equipment fails. Professionals should have a backup plan.
Ask what happens if the DJ gets sick or has an emergency. No one likes thinking about this, but a wedding date cannot
simply be moved to next Tuesday.
Ask whether the person you’re speaking with is the person who will actually DJ your wedding.
Ask how they coordinate with photographers, planners, venues and catering teams. Weddings work best when vendors communicate.
Ask how they handle your do-not-play list.
Ask whether they take breaks during dancing and, if so, what happens to the music.
Ask what they need from you before the wedding and when they need it.
Finally, ask a question I love: “What do you think couples misunderstand about hiring a wedding DJ?”
That answer can tell you a lot about the person sitting across from you.
The goal isn’t to interrogate vendors. It’s to have a real conversation. You should leave understanding not only what they provide, but how they approach a wedding.

Finding a DJ shouldn’t feel like picking a name out of a hat. The right questions make the decision much easier.
